Fredda creates sculpture and assemblages from recycled materials. She started as a gardener, creating metal sculptures that mimic live plants. Essentially, a self-taught artist, she learned to weld when she was 65 and enjoys making work that make viewers smile.
Artist Statement
Fruits and Vegetables pays homage to the fine array of local produce that our farmers bring to the market and the artful way they display their wares. The containers were contributed by the vendors and the vintage “produce” comes from my own collection and sourced from “junk” and antique shops in the greater Capital area—honoring the precept to support our local economy.
The two smaller works are Buy Local and Canning 101. Buy Local highlights how far the vegetable we buy in the supermarket travel to reach our tables and the additional costs to our environment. Canning 101 was created as part of a recent show called “Home Economics” honoring women’s work in the home in the 1950’s.
