Joyce S Chan
The Artist
Formerly a painter, I began pulping the paper I was working on and creating sculpture with my parents' restaurant’s golden tablecloths. Paper can be broken down to a soft pulp, made sharp with a few certain cuts, or backed to emulate fabric. Materials can co-exist, while almost falling apart. I am interested in tension, inherent contradictions, and one’s negotiation of everyday life as a Chinese-American Female. Everyday symbols and materials can hold or lose meaning, depending on context. How information is diluted, interpreted, and reinterpreted is a central theme.
Select exhibits include The Drawing Center, Flushing Town Hall, Local Project, Collar Works, The Hallway at Second Street Studios, PH GALLERY + STUDIO, Pause Gallery, academic gallery, Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, Sculptors Guild at Governors Island, LaGuardia Community College, Manhattanville College and Iona College. She has participated in the Public Programs “There is so much that You have never said to your Companion” at The Drawing Center, “Dinner Without an Agenda with Herb Tam” with The Queens Museum and "Dinner + Dialogue: The American Dream" at Collar Works. Joyce received her MFA from CUNY Queens College and her BFA from Manhattanville College.
